Beavers swim up a stream looking for a good place to make a pond. They cut down trees and bushes and build a dam across the stream. The beaver pushes the ends of branches into the mud. More mud and sticks are added. It uses its flat tail to pack the sticks and mud together. The water from the stream now makes a pond behind the dam.

Next, the beavers build their house, called a lodge. It is made of packed mud and branches, too. They dig two underwater tunnels to serve as entrances. Beavers keep a pile of sticks hidden undderwwater near the lodge. These sticks are their food during the winter, when the pond is covered with snow and ice.

If the beaver senses danger while it is busy building, it slaps its tail on the water. This loud noise tells other beavers to dive underwater for safety. Its tail helps it swim fast, too. Beavers really have a talented tail!
